What Is A ISA?

TL;DR
  • ISA here means Information System Analyst, an ICCP credential, not any other certification sharing the acronym.
  • The exam outline has seven weighted domains; Foundations of Information Systems is the largest at 20%.
  • The individual exam is 90 minutes; at least 50% earns Practitioner and at least 70% earns Master.
  • The Professional Exam Fee is USD 350 including proctoring; the initial application is USD 45, with students exempt.

What an ISA Actually Is

If you searched "What is a ISA?" and landed here, the first thing to settle is which ISA we mean. The acronym is shared by several unrelated credentials and products. On this site, ISA means Information System Analyst: a professional certification that tests whether a candidate understands how information systems are conceived, specified, built, secured, managed and acquired. The issuer's current navigation sometimes writes the name as "Information Systems Analyst," but it is the same credential family.

The ISA is a broad, generalist credential. It does not certify mastery of one vendor's product or one programming language. Instead it measures whether you can reason across the whole life of an information system: the business case, the data model, the architecture, the infrastructure, the project, the analysis and design work, and the governance and sourcing decisions around it. Think of it as a test of the analyst's full toolkit.

For deeper background on naming and terminology, see our companion explainers: What Is ISA?, What Does ISA Stand For? and What Is ISA Certification?.

Who Runs the Credential

The certification is administered by the Institute for the Certification of Computing Professionals (ICCP). The exam content is described in ICCP's published subject outline, which carries the label IS2010 ISA Model Curriculum Exam Outline. That label refers to the model curriculum the outline is built on; it is not a newly published 2026 syllabus, and it should not be confused with the separate IS Core sample or the generic six-section IS Core outline, which do not replace the ISA scope.

The ICCP outline is a seven-page document available from the issuer's subject-outlines page. It is the authoritative statement of what is tested, and it is worth reading in full before buying any third-party material. Our ISA Certification overview and ISA Meaning article cover the identity question from other angles.

Why the source matters: Several third-party listings on Docsity, Stuvia and SlideServe use the ISA name, and a Coursera/IBM systems-analyst program covers a different credential entirely. None of those establish the ISA blueprint or current exam rules. Treat the ICCP outline and ICCP's own pages as the source of truth, and everything else as unofficial supplementary reading.

The Seven Weighted Domains

The outline divides the exam into seven domains whose weights total 100%. Weights tell you where the points are, so they should drive how you allocate study hours.

DomainWeight
Foundations of Information Systems20%
Data and Information Management15%
Enterprise Architecture10%
IT Infrastructure15%
IS Project Management15%
Systems Analysis & Design15%
IS Strategy, Management & Acquisition10%

What each domain asks of you

Domain 1: Foundations of Information Systems (20%)

The largest domain sets the vocabulary and mental model for everything else. Expect questions on what information systems are, how they support organizations, and how the pieces relate.

  • Components and types of information systems in an organizational context
  • How systems support business processes and decision-making
  • Core terminology you will need to read scenario questions in every other domain

Domain 2: Data and Information Management (15%)

This is the most hands-on technical domain for many candidates.

  • SQL: reading and reasoning about queries
  • Normalization and why designers apply it
  • Data quality: causes of poor data and how to control it

Domain 3: Enterprise Architecture (10%)

Architecture is about structure and alignment across the whole enterprise.

  • Architecture frameworks and their purpose
  • Metrics for evaluating architecture and systems
  • Integration approaches and virtualization concepts

Domain 4: IT Infrastructure (15%)

The physical and logical foundation systems run on, with a strong security component.

  • Infrastructure components and how they fit together
  • Infrastructure security principles and controls

Domain 5: IS Project Management (15%)

Delivering systems on time and within constraints.

  • Planning and managing an information systems project
  • Procurement, risk management and project closure

Domain 6: Systems Analysis & Design (15%)

The analyst's core craft, and the domain most directly tied to the job title.

  • Gathering and documenting requirements
  • Feasibility analysis
  • UML and other modeling notations

Domain 7: IS Strategy, Management & Acquisition (10%)

The organizational and governance layer.

  • IT governance and how it aligns IT with the business
  • Sourcing and acquisition decisions

Exam Format and Scoring Levels

According to the current individual credential page, the certification uses one 90-minute Information Systems Analyst Exam. Your score determines the level you earn:

  • Practitioner: at least 50%
  • Master: at least 70%

Both levels also require adherence to the ICCP Code of Ethics. Our ISA Passing Score article digs into what those thresholds mean in practice.

What we could not verify

A current individual ISA question count was not confirmed in the reviewed public issuer sources, so we are not going to give you one. If you see a specific number of questions quoted on a third-party site, treat it as unverified until you find it on an ICCP page. The same caution applies to pass rates: no current issuer-wide ISA pass rate was verified. The only historical data point in our research is academic and narrow: a Colorado Mesa University Computer Information Systems program review reported that five of nine students passed in 2020-21, or 55.6%. That is a small historical classroom cohort, not a statistic about all candidates today. See ISA Pass Rate 2026: What the Data Shows and How Hard Is the ISA Exam? for context on difficulty.

Conflicting sources you may run into

ICCP's general FAQ describes a two-exam associate pathway pairing ISA with another exam and quotes a USD 250 minimum, which differs from the exact individual ISA page's single 90-minute exam. Likewise, a generic USD 299 exam figure in the FAQ does not replace the current ISA-selectable USD 350 product. When sources conflict, favor the page that is specific to the Information Systems Analyst credential.

Sample exam caveat: ICCP offers an official two-hour ISA Sample Examination for Universities, Colleges and Polytechnics. It is excellent academic preparation material, but its two-hour timer is not the current individual certification timer. Practice with it for content, not for pacing against the real 90 minutes.

Eligibility, Fees and Registration

Eligibility

Both the Practitioner and Master levels require adherence to the ICCP Code of Ethics and either a bachelor's degree or at least two years of experience. That "or" is useful: working professionals without a degree can qualify through experience. Full details are in ISA Requirements 2026: Eligibility, Prerequisites & How to Qualify.

How testing works

ICCP arranges computer-based internet testing through approved in-person or remote proctors. Remote testing requires ID verification, a webcam, reliable internet and a web conference. You receive an immediate unofficial result, which ICCP then verifies. If you need another attempt, ICCP's general FAQ advises waiting 30 days. Scheduling specifics are covered in ISA Exam Dates 2026.

The university route

ICCP also runs a separate Learning Outcome Assessment route for institutions. In that route, associate ISA eligibility is described at 50% and Master ISA eligibility at 70%, followed by a separate credential purchase. Passing the assessment and claiming certification are two distinct steps. The scenario-based objective examinations may be split into two institutional sessions, and institutional pricing is USD 50 per student, capped at USD 2,500 per semester for up to 100 students, with additional volume pricing beyond that. Students moving from a college course into professional certification should read that page carefully, because the academic path and the individual professional path have different rules.

Scenario Practice Across the Domains

The Learning Outcome Assessment is described as scenario-based, so it pays to practice reasoning through situations rather than memorizing definitions. The original practice scenarios below illustrate the style; they are written for study purposes and are not actual exam items. For full question banks, use our ISA practice test.

Scenario 1: Foundations

A regional retailer's sales, inventory and customer-service tools each keep their own records, and managers complain that reports never agree. Which type of problem is this, and what does the organization need?

  • Recognize it as fragmented systems failing to support organizational decision-making
  • The reasoning being tested is how information systems should serve business processes, not which product to buy

Scenario 2: Data and Information Management

A customer table stores several phone numbers in a single column separated by commas, and the same city appears spelled three ways. Identify the normalization issue and the data quality issue.

  • Multi-valued data in one column violates first normal form
  • Inconsistent spellings are a data quality and validation problem, addressed with constraints and controlled values

Scenario 3: Enterprise Architecture

After a merger, two companies must exchange order data between unrelated platforms. Which architectural concern comes first?

  • Integration approach and shared standards, guided by an architecture framework
  • Consider what metrics would show the integration is succeeding

Scenario 4: IT Infrastructure

An organization consolidates servers using virtualization and wants to limit damage if one workload is compromised. What infrastructure security principle applies?

  • Isolation and segmentation, with least-privilege access
  • Understand how virtualization changes the security picture

Scenario 5: IS Project Management

A project depends on a vendor's delivery of a key component, and that vendor has missed dates before. What should the project manager do?

  • Treat it as a risk: identify, assess, plan a response and monitor
  • Review procurement terms and contingencies

Scenario 6: Systems Analysis & Design

Stakeholders give conflicting requirements for a new ordering system, and the sponsor asks whether the project is even worthwhile. Which activities address each concern?

  • Requirements elicitation and reconciliation for the conflict
  • Feasibility analysis for the worth question, and UML models to communicate the agreed design

Scenario 7: IS Strategy, Management & Acquisition

The board wants assurance that IT spending supports business goals, and leadership is deciding whether to build, buy or outsource a capability.

  • IT governance provides the oversight structure
  • Sourcing analysis weighs control, cost, risk and strategic fit

Scheduling Your Preparation by Domain

Rather than a generic routine, let the domain weights and your background decide the order. This sample sequence assumes a candidate with some general IT exposure; adjust if your background differs.

Week 1

Foundations first (20%)

  • Largest weight, and its vocabulary makes every later domain easier to read
  • Download and read the full ICCP outline
Week 2

Data and Information Management (15%)

  • Write SQL queries by hand, not just read them
  • Normalize a messy table through each normal form
Week 3

Systems Analysis & Design (15%)

  • Practice requirements, feasibility and UML diagrams on a small case
Week 4

Infrastructure and Project Management (15% each)

  • Pair security controls with risk and procurement thinking
Week 5

Architecture and Strategy (10% each), then review

  • Take timed practice against a 90-minute clock

Key Takeaway

Weight your hours, not your interests. Domains 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 together make up 80% of the exam, so a candidate who skips the "boring" governance and architecture topics can still pass but cannot afford to neglect the large technical domains.

Who Hires Information System Analysts

Information system analysts work wherever organizations need someone to translate between business needs and technology: corporate IT departments, consulting firms, government agencies, healthcare systems, financial institutions and software vendors. Typical work includes gathering requirements, modeling processes and data, evaluating vendors and solutions, coordinating projects, and advising on governance. The seven domains map directly onto those duties, which is part of why the credential is framed around a model curriculum used in academic information systems programs.

On compensation, be cautious. Occupational salary evidence exists for systems analysts as a job category, but we have no verified evidence of a certification-specific pay premium for holding the ISA. Anyone promising a guaranteed raise is overreaching. Our ISA Salary Guide, Is the ISA Certification Worth It? and ISA Jobs articles weigh the evidence in more detail, and ISA Training covers preparation options.

ISA compared with other ICCP credentials

Candidates sometimes ask how the ISA relates to ICCP's other offerings. The ISA is centered on analysis and system lifecycle breadth, and the ICCP exam fee product lists the Information Systems Analyst and IS Core as separate exam choices, so confirm which exam you are registering for. Always check the issuer's current pages when comparing credentials rather than relying on third-party summaries.

Staying Certified

ICCP describes the credential as lifelong, but you must renew to maintain current certified-member status. The requirements depend on your membership level:

LevelProfessional developmentAnnual fee
Practitioner and Master120 acceptable hours per three-year cycleUSD 75
Associate60 hours per three-year cycleUSD 35

The first renewal is due the day after your first certification anniversary. Note that the institutional Learning Outcome Assessment page mentions 20 hours of continuing education per year, which differs from the professional renewal rule; apply the requirements for the membership level you were actually awarded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a ISA in this context?

It is the Information System Analyst certification administered by the Institute for the Certification of Computing Professionals (ICCP). It is unrelated to other credentials that happen to share the acronym.

How long is the ISA exam and what score do I need?

The current individual credential page specifies one 90-minute exam. A score of at least 50% earns Practitioner and at least 70% earns Master. A current question count was not verified, so none is stated here.

Do I need a degree to qualify?

Not necessarily. Both levels require either a bachelor's degree or at least two years of experience, plus adherence to the ICCP Code of Ethics.

How much does it cost?

The Professional Exam Fee is USD 350 including proctoring, and the initial candidate application is USD 45, with students exempt from that initial fee. Renewal is USD 75 annually for Practitioner and Master, and USD 35 for Associate.

Can I retake the exam if I do not pass?

ICCP's general FAQ advises waiting 30 days before another attempt. Check the issuer's current guidance before scheduling, since policies can change.

The ISA rewards breadth: a candidate who understands how data, architecture, infrastructure, projects, analysis and governance fit together is well placed. Start with the official outline, build a domain-weighted plan, and use the ISA practice test to check your readiness.
