What You Are Actually Studying For
The Information System Analyst (ISA) credential is issued by the Institute for the Certification of Computing Professionals (ICCP). Its content blueprint is the seven-page ICCP exam outline built on the IS2010 model curriculum. IS2010 is the published label of that outline, not a newly released 2026 syllabus, so you should not expect a brand-new set of topics this year. ICCP's navigation sometimes uses the wording "Information Systems Analyst," but it is the same credential this guide covers.
Be careful about what you search for. Several unrelated credentials share the three-letter acronym, and study material written for them will waste your time. Some search results also cover the separate IS Core exam, which ICCP lists as its own exam choice with its own outline. If you need a refresher on the basics first, see What Is ISA Certification? and What Does ISA Stand For? before going further.
Exam Logistics and Fees
Format, timing and passing thresholds
The current individual credential page specifies a single 90-minute Information Systems Analyst Exam. A score of at least 50% earns the Practitioner level, and at least 70% earns the Master level. A current individual question count was not verified in public issuer sources, so do not trust any forum post that states one with confidence. Plan your pacing around the 90-minute limit instead. For a deeper look at the thresholds, read ISA Passing Score 2026.
Eligibility
Both levels require adherence to the ICCP Code of Ethics and either a bachelor's degree or at least two years of experience. The full breakdown is in ISA Requirements 2026.
Fees and scheduling
| Item | Verified detail |
|---|---|
| Initial candidate application | USD 45; requires a membership application and resume/CV; students exempt from the initial fee |
| Professional Exam Fee | USD 350 including proctoring; product data lists Information Systems Analyst and IS Core as separate exam choices |
| Official Examinations Guide | USD 125 public listing; advertises detailed outlines, references and sample questions (paid guide not reviewed for this article) |
| Retake wait | General FAQ advises waiting 30 days before another attempt |
ICCP arranges computer-based internet testing through approved in-person or remote proctors. Remote testing requires ID verification, a webcam, reliable internet, and a web conference. You receive an immediate unofficial result, which ICCP then verifies. For the full cost picture, including renewal, see ISA Certification Cost 2026, and for scheduling questions see ISA Exam Dates 2026.
The Seven Domains and How to Weight Your Time
The seven weighted domains total 100%. Use the weights to decide where your hours go, but remember that a 10% domain can still contain enough questions to decide a borderline result.
| Domain | Weight | Study priority |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Foundations of Information Systems | 20% | Highest; broad vocabulary feeds every other domain |
| 2. Data and Information Management | 15% | High; very testable with concrete problems |
| 3. Enterprise Architecture | 10% | Moderate; framework terminology |
| 4. IT Infrastructure | 15% | High; breadth across networks, security and virtualization |
| 5. IS Project Management | 15% | High; procedural and scenario-driven |
| 6. Systems Analysis & Design | 15% | High; core analyst craft |
| 7. IS Strategy, Management & Acquisition | 10% | Moderate; governance and sourcing judgment |

Domain-by-Domain Priorities
Domain 1: Foundations of Information Systems (20%)
The largest domain functions as the vocabulary layer for the whole exam. Expect to explain what an information system is, how its components interact, and how it supports organizational operations and decisions.
- Distinguish data, information and knowledge, and know which system type serves which management level.
- Be able to describe how information systems create value for an organization, not just what they are.
- Learn terms precisely; scenario questions often hinge on one definition.
Domain 2: Data and Information Management (15%)
This domain rewards hands-on practice more than memorization. Work through real problems rather than rereading notes.
- SQL: reading and writing queries involving joins, filtering, grouping and aggregation.
- Normalization: identify violations of normal forms and decide how to decompose a table.
- Data quality: recognize accuracy, completeness, consistency and timeliness problems and the controls that address them.
Domain 3: Enterprise Architecture (10%)
Architecture questions test whether you can place a technology decision in a broader structural context.
- Architecture frameworks and what each layer of an enterprise architecture is meant to describe.
- Metrics used to judge whether an architecture is delivering value.
- Integration approaches between systems, and the role of virtualization.
Domain 4: IT Infrastructure (15%)
Think of infrastructure as the platform every application depends on, and be ready to reason about trade-offs rather than recite specifications.
- Core hardware, networking and operating environment concepts.
- Infrastructure security: controls, threats and the layered-defense mindset.
- Virtualization and how it changes capacity, cost and risk.
Domain 5: IS Project Management (15%)
Questions here are usually situational: a project is in a given state and you choose the best next action.
- Procurement decisions inside a project, including how buying versus building affects schedule and risk.
- Risk identification, assessment and response planning.
- Project closure activities, including acceptance, documentation and lessons learned.
Domain 6: Systems Analysis & Design (15%)
This is the domain closest to the daily work implied by the credential's title.
- Requirements elicitation, documentation and validation.
- Feasibility analysis across technical, economic, operational and schedule dimensions.
- UML: reading use case, class, sequence and activity diagrams and choosing the right one for a given communication need.
Domain 7: IS Strategy, Management & Acquisition (10%)
The smallest-weighted domains still need attention because their questions are judgment-based and difficult to guess.
- IT governance: who decides, who is accountable, and how IT aligns with business strategy.
- Sourcing choices, including outsourcing and in-house development, and the control trade-offs of each.
- Acquisition decisions and how an analyst contributes to them.
Original Scenario Questions to Test Yourself
The following questions are original practice items written for this guide, one per domain. They illustrate the scenario-based style described for ICCP assessments but are not actual exam questions. Try each before reading the reasoning.
Domain 1: Foundations of Information Systems
Scenario: A regional manager receives a weekly report summarizing sales variance by product line and uses it to adjust next month's inventory targets. Which type of system most directly produced this report: a transaction processing system, a management information system, or an executive support system?
Reasoning: The report summarizes operational data for a middle manager's periodic decision, which is the classic role of a management information system. A transaction processing system records the underlying sales events; it does not summarize them for tactical decisions.
Domain 2: Data and Information Management
Scenario: An orders table stores customer name, customer address, product name and product price in every row. Updating a customer's address requires editing many rows. What is the best remedy?
Reasoning: Customer attributes depend on the customer, not on the order, so they should be moved into their own table linked by a key. This removes the update anomaly and is the standard result of normalizing toward third normal form.
Domain 3: Enterprise Architecture
Scenario: Two acquired business units run separate customer systems, and leadership wants one view of each customer without replacing either system immediately. Which approach best fits a short-term goal?
Reasoning: An integration layer that exposes and reconciles customer data from both systems delivers a unified view without a risky wholesale replacement. Replacement may be a later architectural target, but it does not answer the short-term need.
Domain 4: IT Infrastructure
Scenario: A company wants to reduce the number of underused physical servers while keeping workloads isolated from one another. Which technology addresses both goals, and what new risk does it concentrate?
Reasoning: Server virtualization consolidates workloads onto fewer hosts while keeping them in isolated virtual machines. The concentrated risk is that failure or compromise of a host or hypervisor can affect many workloads at once.
Domain 5: IS Project Management
Scenario: Midway through a project, the primary vendor announces it may be acquired and may discontinue the product you are implementing. What should the project manager do first?
Reasoning: Record the event as a risk, assess its probability and impact, and develop a response such as contract protections or an alternative option. Escalating without analysis, or ignoring it until it occurs, are weaker choices.
Domain 6: Systems Analysis & Design
Scenario: You need to show business stakeholders how a customer interacts with a new self-service portal, focusing on what the system does for the user rather than on internal structure. Which UML diagram is most appropriate?
Reasoning: A use case diagram presents actors and the functionality the system offers them, at a level non-technical stakeholders can follow. A class diagram would expose internal structure that this audience does not need.
Domain 7: IS Strategy, Management & Acquisition
Scenario: A department buys a software service on its own because the central IT process is slow. Which governance weakness does this most clearly illustrate?
Reasoning: It illustrates uncontrolled technology acquisition outside governance, which creates integration, security and cost-visibility problems. The fix is a governance process that is both authoritative and responsive enough that departments do not bypass it.
Key Takeaway
Notice that every answer above turned on matching a concept to a situation, not on recalling a definition in isolation. When you practice, force yourself to explain why the wrong options are wrong. Our ISA practice test is built around that scenario habit.
What the Official Sample Can and Cannot Tell You
ICCP offers an official ISA Sample Examination for universities, colleges and polytechnics. It is genuinely useful because it comes from the issuer, but understand its limits before you calibrate your readiness against it.
- It is academic preparation material with a two-hour format, which is not the 90-minute timer on the current individual certification page.
- It is aimed at institutional assessment, so its framing may differ from the professional exam you will actually sit.
- Scoring well on it indicates familiarity with the content style, not a guaranteed result on the individual exam.
Use it to check that you can handle scenario-based items across all seven areas, then practice under the real 90-minute constraint separately. The ICCP Official Examinations Guide, listed at USD 125 and advertising outlines, references and sample questions, may also be worth a look. We did not review its contents, so verify what is included before buying.
Academic route versus professional route
Many candidates meet ISA through a university course. ICCP's institutional Learning Outcome Assessment route works differently from the individual exam. It describes associate ISA eligibility at 50% and Master ISA eligibility at 70%, followed by a separate credential purchase. Passing the assessment and claiming the certification are distinct steps, so a student who passes in class has not yet certified. The assessment's scenario-based objective exams may be split into two institutional sessions. Institutional pricing is USD 50 per student, capped at USD 2,500 per semester for up to 100 students, with additional volume pricing beyond that. If you are transitioning from a course to the professional credential, read ISA Requirements 2026 and confirm which route applies to you.
What we know about pass rates
No current issuer-wide ISA pass rate was verified. The only historical figure in our sources is academic and narrow: a Colorado Mesa University Computer Information Systems program review (2015-2021) reported that five of nine students passed in 2020-21, or 55.6%. That is a small cohort of students in one program during one year, so it should not be read as a national or current pass rate. For more context, see ISA Pass Rate 2026: What the Data Shows and How Hard Is the ISA Exam?
A Domain-Ordered Study Schedule
Rather than a generic template, this plan sequences domains so earlier material supports later material. Adjust the pace to your background; someone who writes SQL daily can compress Week 2, while someone new to project work may need to extend Week 4.
Foundations of Information Systems
- Build a glossary of core terms; this domain's vocabulary recurs everywhere.
- Map system types to the management levels they serve.
Data and Information Management
- Write SQL queries by hand until joins and grouping feel routine.
- Normalize three messy sample tables and justify each decomposition.
IT Infrastructure and Enterprise Architecture
- Study infrastructure security and virtualization together, since each shapes the other.
- Learn framework layers, metrics and integration patterns as one connected picture.
Systems Analysis and Design, then Project Management
- Practice drawing UML diagrams from short written requirements.
- Work procurement, risk and closure scenarios from a project manager's viewpoint.
IS Strategy, Management and Acquisition, then full review
- Cover governance and sourcing, the shortest domain block.
- Take timed mixed practice under the 90-minute limit and revisit your weakest domain.
Systems Analysis and Design is placed before Project Management on purpose: knowing how requirements and feasibility are established makes the project questions about scope, risk and closure easier to reason about. For a fast final review, keep the ISA Cheat Sheet at hand, and use the full practice test to rehearse the timed format.
After You Pass: Renewal, Jobs and Pay Evidence
Keeping the credential current
ICCP describes the credential as lifelong, but you must renew to maintain current certified-member status. Practitioner and Master are professional levels: renewal requires 120 acceptable professional-development hours per three-year cycle and USD 75 annually, first due the day after the first certification anniversary. Associate renewal requires 60 hours per three-year cycle and USD 35 annually. The institutional page mentions 20 hours per year of continuing education, which differs from the professional rule, so apply the requirements for the membership level you actually hold.
Where the credential fits in a career
Analyst roles appear in many organizations that run business systems, and the credential's domains map onto that kind of work: requirements, data, infrastructure awareness, project involvement and governance. For role patterns, see ISA Jobs and ISA Training.
